How the counting works
Words are counted by splitting your text on whitespace: any sequence of characters between spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as one word. Hyphenated compounds like "state-of-the-art" count as a single word, matching the convention used by most style guides and word processors. Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation (. ! ? …) and paragraphs by blank lines, so the numbers line up with how your document actually reads.
The counter is fully Unicode-aware. Emoji, accented characters and non-Latin scripts are counted correctly — an emoji is one character, not a broken pair of surrogate halves. One honest caveat: for scripts written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, the character count is more meaningful than the word count, because "words" are not separated by whitespace in those languages.
