What is a Character Counter?

A character counter is a tool that measures the exact number of characters in a text, with or without spaces. It's essential for staying within limits on social media posts, SEO meta descriptions, SMS messages and form fields — and QuickKit counts live as you type, privately in your browser.

When character counts actually matter

Character limits are everywhere once you look for them. Google truncates meta descriptions at roughly 155–160 characters on desktop, so an SEO title and description that run long will be cut mid-sentence in search results. X (formerly Twitter) caps standard posts at 280 characters. SMS messages split into multiple segments — and get billed per segment — at 160 GSM characters, or just 70 when your message contains Unicode characters like emoji or accented letters. Instagram captions max out at 2,200 characters and LinkedIn posts at 3,000.

Form fields are the quieter trap: application forms, directory listings, app-store descriptions and database-driven CMS fields often enforce hard maximums that reject or silently truncate longer input. Checking your count before you paste saves you from re-editing inside a cramped form.

Characters vs bytes — why the difference matters

A character is what you see; a byte is what computers store. In UTF-8 encoding, a plain ASCII letter takes one byte, an accented character like é takes two, and most emoji take four. That distinction is crucial when you are working with APIs, databases or SMS gateways, because many of them count bytes or encoded units rather than visible characters.

This counter shows both. The character count is Unicode-aware — an emoji or a Chinese character counts as one character, not as broken surrogate halves — while the UTF-8 byte readout tells you the true storage size. If a database column allows 255 bytes, "Café ☕" uses 9 of them even though it only contains 6 visible characters.

Letters, characters and spaces

People often say "letter count" when they mean "character count" — but they are not the same thing. Characters include letters, digits, punctuation, symbols and spaces. Most platform limits count everything, spaces included, which is why this tool shows the with-spaces figure as the headline number and the without-spaces figure alongside it.

The without-spaces count has its own uses: some academic assignments, translation quotes and typesetting jobs specify lengths in characters excluding spaces. Having both numbers live, plus word and line counts, means you never need a second tool — pick a platform limit from the panel and the progress ring tells you exactly how much room you have left, turning amber at 80% and red the moment you go over.

A quick reference of common platform limits

Keep these numbers in mind the next time you are writing to a constraint. X (Twitter) gives standard accounts 280 characters per post — and counts every URL as a fixed number of characters through its link shortener, so pasting a long link rarely costs as much as it looks. Google search results truncate title tags around 50–60 characters and meta descriptions around 155–160, but the real limit is pixels, so narrow letters buy you a little extra room.

SMS is the sneakiest. A plain GSM-encoded message allows 160 characters per segment, but the moment you include a single character outside the GSM alphabet — an emoji, a smart quote, an accented letter — the whole message switches to Unicode encoding and drops to 70 characters per segment. Longer messages are split and re-joined, and each segment is billed separately. The byte readout in this tool helps you spot Unicode content before your carrier does.

Elsewhere: Instagram captions cap at 2,200 characters (though only the first 125 or so show before "more"), LinkedIn posts allow 3,000, YouTube descriptions allow 5,000, and most app-store short descriptions sit near 80.
